D&D 5e: Catfolk

Hello all!

Today I decided to promote one of the races I made for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. And by made, I mean updated from a 3.5 source. The catfolk was a race introduced in, I think the Fiend Folio. I’ve since lost all those extraneous books published to enhance your 3.5 D&D experience… hold on, I can just look it up on Google.

Okay, the catfolk come out of Races of the Wild, on page 95, to be exact. What a wonderful age we live in! Anyway, I really liked the catfolk, and wanted to make them a playable race for 5th edition. Even if they made the Tabaxi a thin in Volo’s Guide to Monsters. So, it’s up to the DM to distinguish the catfolk from the Tabaxi, if you want them both to exist in your world.

Regardless, here’s the crunch:

Catfolk Racial Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity increases by 2, and your Charisma by 1.

Age. Most catfolk live just as long as humans do, reaching maturity about the same time.

Alignment. Due to their free-spirited and rash nature, most catfolk are chaotic. Many rest about chaotic neutral, and many others chaotic good. Few are evil and even fewer are lawful.

Size. A catfolk only stands a few inches taller than the average human of their gender. Males tend to be much heavier, and females much lighter.

Speed. Your base land speed is 40ft.

Darkvision. A catfolk can see in the dark up to 30ft.

Scent. A catfolk has very strong olfactory glands, allowing them to tell a creature’s location by scent, or track a creature by those means.

Cat Reflexes. A catfolk is proficient with the Perception and Stealth skills.

Cat Nap. A catfolk can take a long rest in pieces, as long as it has rested for 8 hours within a 24-hour period. Upon finishing the eighth hour of rest, the catfolk regains all abilities, spells, and HP it would for a standard long rest. The same goes for taking a short rest, upon completing four hours of rest, the catfolk regains all abilities, spells, and HP it would for finishing a short rest. A period of rest can also be interrupted, but for no longer than a minute. A catfolk can also remain alert while resting, being able to make an active perception check, if the DM calls for it. If a catfolk has rested at all during the day, it is treated as having taken a long rest when calculating exhaustion.

Languages. A catfolk speaks common and Feline, a language created for personal conversation between catfolk.
